Larry Meyer, Chair
Larry Meyer has enjoyed a long and distinguished business
career, including three and a half decades at the head of the
Michigan Retailers Association. He rescued that organization from
near bankruptcy in the early 1970s and built it into the largest and
most successful state retail association in the nation. He served as
the Director of the State of Michigan Department of Commerce
1989-1990, appointed by Governor James J. Blanchard. He was elected
twice to political office as a member of the Lansing City Council,
serving 1997-2005; in 2002 as Council President. The city advanced
during his tenure, as he worked cooperatively with council members,
Mayor David Hollister and his team, and the public. Mr. Meyer has
always believed that public service is an important duty. He was
elected to office on November 3, 2009, and his term expires December
31, 2016.
Edward Woods III, Vice Chair
Edward Woods III
serves as the director, Office of Communications for the Michigan
Department of Human Services. He provides strategic direction and
strong leadership in marketing and public relations, external and
internal communications, online policy manual development and the
Specialized Action Center. His previous experience includes serving
in the Michigan workforce development system, a Trustee at Lake
Michigan College and teaching political science at Western Michigan
University. In the community, Mr. Woods received the Valuable
Volunteer Award from Reo Elementary in the Lansing Public Schools
District, where he still volunteers today. Mr. Woods completed his
undergraduate studies at Oakwood University in Huntsville, Ala. He
earned his master's degree in public administration from Western
Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Mich. He is married to Donnarie,
and they have two adorable children. He was elected to office on
Nov. 6, 2007, and his term expires on Dec. 31, 2014.
Robin M. Smith, Secretary
Ms. Smith is a lifelong resident of Lansing whose commitment to
service in her community is demonstrated through a rich history of
personal involvement. She is a graduate of Michigan State University
with a bachelor's degree in advertising with an emphasis in
communications. Ms. Smith is currently employed as a Student Parent
Coordinator for the Lansing School District. Her areas of focus are
language arts and literacy. She is the founder of "Express
Yourself", a communications consultant company. Ms. Smith has served
on various boards throughout the community such as former
Chairperson of the Board of Water and Light Board of Commissioners.
She was elected to office on May 3, 2005, and her term expires
December 31, 2012.
Jerry L. Hollister, Treasurer
Mr. Hollister is the Chief Operating Officer for Niowave, a
Lansing-based producer of superconducting particle accelerators. He
received his bachelor's degree in Engineering from the University of
Michigan after graduating from Lansing Eastern High School. Mr.
Hollister was the statewide project manager for Habitat for
Humanity's 2005 Jimmy Carter Work Project. Mr. Hollister has also
previously served as a commissioned officer in the US Navy Civil
Engineer Corps, a minister for the Church of Christ, and as Building
Operations Director for Cooley Law School. Mr. Hollister's family
has a rich history of public service in the Lansing, including his
mother, the late Judy (Hollister) Wolpe, who served as LCC Board
Chair. He and his wife Kathy have 2 children, both of whom attend
school in East Lansing. He was appointed to the Board on April 16,
2007, and elected on November 6, 2007. His term expires December 31,
2014
Deborah Canja, Trustee
Deborah Canja is a Lansing native and graduated from Lansing Eastern High School.
A graduate of UCLA and Loyola Law School, she served for 12 years as a
Michigan Assistant Attorney General, three years as a commercial
realtor and as President of the Michigan Regional Chapter of
Commercial Real Estate Women, and is now the Deputy General
Counsel of the Office of General Counsel in the Michigan Office
of Financial and Insurance Regulation. She has also led two
non-profit organizations serving parents of children with
special needs and disabilities and continues to serve as the CEO
of Bridges4Kids, a non-profit organization providing information
for families and teachers seeking help for children. Deb comes
from a tradition of public service. Her father, Alex, was a
teacher and coach, and worked for 33 years at the Michigan
Department of Education. Her mother, Tess, was the former
Executive Director of the Area Agencies on Aging Association of
Michigan, served as the National President of AARP, and
continues to be involved in senior issues at both national and
state levels. Deb has two sons and lives in Okemos. She was
elected to office on November 6, 2007. She was re-elected on
November 3, 2009, and her term expires December 31, 2016.
Robert E. Proctor, Trustee
Mr. Proctor is an attorney, arbitrator, and mediator. He is a
retired administrative law judge for the Michigan Department of
Civil Service and served as legal counsel for the Labor Committee of
the Michigan House of Representatives. Mr. Proctor serves and has
served on various boards in various capacities within the community
such as the following: former board member and chairperson for the
American Red Cross; current Treasurer of the Black Child and Family
Institute; former Board member of the Lansing Fair Housing Center;
and mentor and tutor for the Lansing School District. He was elected
to office in June 2003. He was re-elected on November 3, 2009, and
his term expires December 31, 2016.
Thomas Rasmusson, Trustee
Thomas Rasmusson is in private law practice, advising clients on
business, forensic accounting and litigation matters. He is a
Director of Velcon Energy Conversion Devices Company and non-profit
New Century, Inc. He has served on three Board Committees: Audit
(Chair), Bylaws, and Nominations (Chair). Dr. Rasmusson is admitted
before the United States Supreme Court, and a former Assistant
Prosecutor and Special Prosecutor. He is an Adjunct Professor in
International and Foreign Relations Law at Thomas M. Cooley Law
School, and formerly Director of the State Department project in
West Africa and USAID consultant. He has been published on business,
accounting, Sarbanes-Oxley, negotiation, banking and other issues,
and made presentations at programs at Yale, Harvard Law School and
the Wharton School of Business. He was elected to office in 1999. He
was re-elected on May 3, 2005, and his term expires December 31,
2012.
